This week was busy and had no shortage of drama. On Monday, the newest member of the House, Rep. David Gottfried, was sworn in, restoring the chamber's 67-67 split. And on Thursday, former Senator from Grand Rapids Justin Eichorn resigned following his arrest. The Governor has not scheduled a special election to fill Eichorn's vacant Senate seat, so the legislature is back to 200 members once again.

GMNP UPDATE - 3/21/25

Dear GMNP Members,

This week was busy and had no shortage of drama. On Monday, the newest member of the House, Rep. David Gottfried, was sworn in, restoring the chamber's 67-67 split. And on Thursday, former Senator from Grand Rapids Justin Eichorn resigned following his arrest. The Governor has not scheduled a special election to fill Eichorn's vacant Senate seat, so the legislature is back to 200 members once again.

You'll see committee agendas heating up next week as the push to meet bill deadlines intensifies, and there may be some evening hearings scheduled throughout the week too.

The Governor also released his revised budget on Friday. He recommended cuts in a number of key DEED programs, including:

  • Contaminated Site Cleanup & Investigation Grants - $750,000 each year FY26-27 and FY28-29

  • Job Creation Fund - $3 million each year FY26-27 and FY28-29

  • Emerging Entrepreneur Loan Program - $500,000 each year FY26-27 and FY28-29

  • Host Communities - $750,000 each year FY26-27 and FY28-29

  • Small Business Assistance Partnership Grant Program - $1 million each year FY26-27 and FY28-29

  • Pathways to Prosperity - $1 million each year FY26-27 and FY28-29

  • Redevelopment Grant Program - $1 million each year FY26-27 and FY28-29

If you have questions or want to discuss anything further, I encourage you to reach out at darielle@gmnp.org or (651) 295-1908.

Sincerely,

Darielle Dannen
